ADDICTIONS (masturbation, pornography, incense, fornication, adultery, drugs, smoking, bad eating habits, drunkenness and many more)

To be frank, this is one area in our generation that is eating deep into the Christian society (church) most especially the youths. Most persons find these addictions too difficult to control, to overcome and as such it results to depression, unhappiness, sadness for persons who still have the fear of God (a guilty conscience).

Well the good news is, you're still alive, because your conscience is. But for others, who don't show an expression of remorse, are those who have chosen to take it as a part of their life. And so it isn't wrong for them.

They are right to some extent, in the sense that we all have weaknesses in as much as you're a human being. It's part of human nature, so they (that aren't remorseful) have chosen to live with it, and live in depression over it. But the bad side is this, you are supposed to know how to condition your body to certain things. Though it is easier said than done.

Addictions is one aspect of life that most believers have to conquer (I included). And very few are not found wanting of these things. These set of persons are already Holy Spirit tuned as we call it.
This doesn't mean they don't feel all those arousal, sexual drive as the case maybe. They do, but the ability to control and condition the body with the help of the Holy Spirit is what is vital.

Mark 14:38 says "Keep awake and watch and pray (constantly), that you may not enter into temptation; the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak" (Amplified Bible). Matthew 26:41 says the same thing too.

It is normal to feel aroused, to have little pleasure, and be sexually driven sometimes. In fact it is a gift and a blessing from God to man.

Just imagine seeing a man who doesn't feel;
  1. Aroused around certain women. Note certain women, depending on the kind of woman he is attracted to.
  2. Who sees a woman's breast, butts unexpectedly and not feel hormones moving over his body. No matter the man of God you are.
  3. Who sees a naked picture accidentally and not feel different levels of arousal.
  4. Feel pleasure, have pleasures sometimes.
Then you should suspect that such person, is not a human being.

The problem is not in having those pleasures, arousal, sexual drive, and urges. The problem lies, when your desires, pleasures begins to control you.

You are not supposed to be controlled by your pleasures, desires and the fleshy things that the body needs. Rather you should be the one giving the conditions that your flesh (body) must abide to. And that is where the Holy Spirit becomes of great importance.

HOW TO CONQUER ADDICTIONS:

  1. You need the Holy Spirit as the main anchor of your spirit, soul and body.
  2. Know your weaknesses. What are those things that arouse you, what are those locations that triggers your pleasures and fantasies, what are those places, websites that put you out of control?
  3. Know your sense organs well. There are some persons, their eyes is the major organ for pleasure, while for others the hands, and for others again body contatcts (skin contact), some ears, and all that. But take note, the eyes, mouths and hands are the most used organ for pleasures, fantasy, and lust. What the eyes see most times is too difficult to forget. In Matthew 18:8 the Bible says "And if your hand or your foot causes you to stumble and sin, cut it off and throw it away from you; it is better (more profitable and wholesome) for you to enter life maimed or lame than to have two hands or two feet and be thrown into the everlasting fire" (Amplified Bible). That is why the Holy Spirit is needed, to help us have dominance our spiritual life and so the physical becomes easy. But be careful not to tempt the devil, by trying to boast that you are immune to temptation, because you can never TEMPT TEMPTATION. Satan is temptation himself, and you want to tempt him. Not possible, you'll be the one to regret it.
  4. The fact that you think of women, nudes, drinking, smoking, drugs, porn and all that doesn't mean you should think less of yourself. We are human beings, even God himself knows this. Job 15:14-16 which says "What is man, that he could be pure and clean? And he who is born of a woman, that he could be right and just? Behold, [God] puts  no trust in his Holy ones [the angels]; indeed, the heaven are not clean in His sight. How much less that which is abominable and corrupt, a man who drinks iniquity like water?" (Amplified Bible). So our Heavenly Father recognizes our flaws, even the Heavens are not clean before him. But his grace and mercy is what makes you and I white as snow each day. But this doesn't mean you should continue to sin, for Romans 6:1-2 says "WHAT SHALL we say [to all this]? Are we to remain in sin in order that God's grace (favor and mercy) may multiply and overflow? Certainly not! How can we who died to sin live in it any longer?" (Amplified Bible).
Jesus Christ knew we weren't perfect and that was one of the reasons he died for us. If we were, there wouldn't have been the need for the death of Our LORD Jesus Christ.

The major criteria is this, be moderate in everything and anything you do. Too much of everything is bad.

Also learn to resist the devil and he will flee from you. James 4:7 "But rather resist the temptation (devil) and he will flee from you" (Amplified Bible).
Note that God doesn't tempt a person, no he doesn't and he will never. The Devil does that. Temptations could be a time for us we to check ourselves, because it is a sign that our flesh is growing stronger than the spirit.

In conclusion, if you keep all these in mind, and many more you will learn on your journey to salvation, then you are good to overcoming your addictions.
